Artist statement: This piece depicts the healing and peace that I find when I listen to wild birds singing in the trees. Researchers from King’s College in London did an experiment to explore the mental health benefits of exposure to nature. They found that birdsong increased people’s mental well-being. In fact, recordings of birdsongs are sometimes used in classrooms, airports and other public spaces to bring a sense of calm. There are a few theories on why birdsong has a positive effect on us. The explanation I like the most, is simply that the act of a bird singing connects us to another living thing — our feathered friends. Birds reconnect us to the natural world where we can find a sense of belonging and serenity. A place where we feel held.
